Your plain-English guide to what’s happening in AI

Hello, friend!

If it feels like AI is moving faster than a coffee percolator on a Monday morning — you’re not wrong. This week was packed with big news from all the major AI assistants. Let me break it all down for you in plain language, no tech degree required.

Here’s what happened this week with the five biggest AI tools you’ve probably heard of: Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Grok, and Google Gemini.

🤖 Claude (by Anthropic) — Big News: Going Public!

This was a huge week for Claude’s maker, Anthropic. Here are the highlights:

Anthropic filed for an IPO. That means the company is getting ready to sell shares to regular investors on the stock market — just like buying Apple or Amazon stock. They join a wave of AI companies preparing to go public this year, following SpaceX’s filing and ahead of OpenAI. It’s a sign that AI is now being treated as serious, long-term business infrastructure.

Claude had a brief outage. On Monday, June 2nd, Claude went down for several hours. Many users — and even some businesses that rely on it — were temporarily unable to use the service. Anthropic acknowledged the issue and fixed it, but it was a reminder that when we start depending on AI tools for daily tasks, a hiccup can really disrupt our day.

Expanded cybersecurity efforts. Anthropic announced it’s growing “Project Glasswing” — a program that uses Claude’s most powerful model (called Mythos) to help find hidden security flaws in important software. The program is now expanding to over 150 organizations across 15+ countries. Think of it like having an AI safety inspector checking the digital locks on critical systems.

🔍 Try this: “What is an IPO, and what does it mean for a tech company to go public?” — Ask Claude or any AI assistant to explain it in simple terms!

💬 ChatGPT (by OpenAI) — Job Search Help & New Security

OpenAI had a quietly productive week with several useful improvements rolling out to ChatGPT:

Job search and resume help is here. ChatGPT now lets you upload your resume, tailor it to a specific job, and download a polished, professional version — all in one place. It can also help you find relevant job listings. This is available on the free plan in the U.S., so you don’t need to pay to try it!

Better account security. OpenAI added “Active Sessions” — a new feature that lets you see all the devices currently logged into your ChatGPT account, and sign out of any you don’t recognize. It’s like checking who has a key to your house and taking back the ones you didn’t give out.

GPT-5.6 is on the horizon. OpenAI is preparing to release GPT-5.6 this month, promising improvements in reasoning, better decision-making, and lower costs. Meanwhile, some older models are being retired to make room for newer ones.

🔍 Try this: “Help me write a short cover letter for a [type of job] position” — ChatGPT’s new resume tools make this easier than ever!

🪟 Microsoft Copilot — A Super App Is Coming

Microsoft held its annual developer conference called “Build 2026” this week in San Francisco, and Copilot was front and center.

A Copilot “super app” is in the works. Microsoft is redesigning Copilot into one unified app that works across all your Microsoft programs — Word, Outlook, Teams, and more. Think of it as a central “AI assistant hub” instead of separate tools scattered across different programs.

Meet Scout. Microsoft announced a new AI agent called Scout that can work across Teams, Outlook, and OneDrive — taking real actions on your behalf. Imagine telling it “schedule a meeting and attach the document I was working on” — and it just does it.

Copilot is now more affordable. Starting July 1st, Microsoft is making Copilot a permanent part of its Microsoft 365 Business plans (the same subscription many people already have for Word and Excel), rather than a separate add-on. That means more people will have access to it automatically.

Bonus: Microsoft also announced new AI-powered image models now built into PowerPoint and OneDrive — so your presentations can get a visual boost without leaving the app.

🔍 Try this: If you use Microsoft 365, look for the Copilot button inside Word or Outlook and ask it to summarize an email thread or improve a paragraph you’ve written.

⚡ Grok (by xAI / Elon Musk) — Video Generation Arrives

Grok — the AI assistant built into the X platform (formerly Twitter) — had some exciting updates this week:

Grok Imagine Video 1.5 is here. xAI launched a new AI video generation feature. You can now describe a scene or upload an image, and Grok will generate a short video clip from it. Elon Musk himself shared an AI-generated trailer for the classic story of Troy as a demonstration. Early testing puts it near the top of independent AI video rankings.

Grok can now create documents. Need a formatted invoice, a presentation, or a budget spreadsheet? Grok now generates Word documents, PowerPoint slides, Excel files, and PDFs — styled and ready to use. This is a big step toward Grok becoming a full work assistant, not just a chatbot.

Grok Build gets updates. For those who like to tinker, Grok’s developer tool (Grok Build) also received updates this week, including improved image editing and better web search routing.

🔍 Try this: If you’re on X (Twitter), tap the Grok icon and try: “Create a short poem about spring mornings and turn it into a Word document I can download.”

🌟 Google Gemini — Your Morning Briefing, Redesigned

Google has been on a tear since its I/O conference a couple of weeks ago, and the updates are continuing to roll out:

A beautiful new look. Google rebuilt the Gemini app from scratch with a new design called “Neural Expressive” — featuring smoother animations, livelier colors, and a more pleasant feel overall. It’s one of the more visually polished AI apps available right now.

Daily Brief feature. Gemini now offers a personalized morning digest — a quick summary of what’s happening in your world based on your interests. Think of it like a personal news assistant that knows what you care about.

Gemini 3.5 coming in June. Google’s newest, more powerful model (Gemini 3.5 Pro) is expected to arrive later this month. The existing Gemini 3.5 Flash model — which debuted at Google I/O — is already live and reportedly runs four times faster than previous top-tier models.

Gemini Spark for AI Ultra subscribers. Google also introduced Gemini Spark, a personal AI agent that can take actions across your Google apps — like scheduling, searching your Gmail, and managing your calendar — for subscribers on the top-tier AI Ultra plan.

With 900 million users already on Gemini, Google is clearly making a push to be your all-day AI companion, not just a search engine helper.

🔍 Try this: Open the Gemini app on your phone and say: “Give me a quick morning briefing about [your favorite topic]” — then see what it puts together for you!

🗣️ Reader Question of the Week

“With so many AI tools, how do I know which one to use?”

Great question — and one I hear a lot! Here’s my honest take: they’re all pretty capable now, and the best one is usually the one already on your phone or computer.

  • Use Gemini if you’re deep in Google (Gmail, Google Docs, Android)
  • Use Copilot if you use Microsoft 365 (Word, Outlook, Teams)
  • Use ChatGPT for job searching, writing help, or general questions
  • Use Claude for thoughtful, longer conversations or detailed analysis
  • Use Grok if you’re on X (Twitter) and want real-time news combined with AI

Don’t worry about picking the “perfect” one. Trying any of them is better than trying none!

That’s your AI news for the week of June 4, 2026. As always, my goal is to help you feel informed, not overwhelmed. You don’t need to use every new feature — but knowing they exist puts you in the driver’s seat.

Until next week,
Steve
