📹 Staying Connected: Video Calling Made Simple
If the idea of video calling still feels like something for “other people,” here’s the truth: it’s simpler than a phone call once you’ve done it twice, and it’s often the closest thing to seeing family in person.
📹 What You’ll Need
- A smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera (most already have one)
- WiFi or cell service
- The other person’s phone number or email
📹 Step by Step
- Pick your app. If you have an iPhone and they do too, FaceTime is built in — no download needed. If either of you has an Android phone, Google Meet or WhatsApp work across both types.
- Open the app and find the person. Usually a “New Call” or video camera icon, then their name or number.
- Tap the video call button (not the regular phone icon — look for a little camera symbol).
- Wait a few seconds. It rings, then connects automatically.
- Say hello. That’s genuinely it.
💡 Try This This Week
Ask a family member to do a quick “test call” with you — even just for two minutes. Getting comfortable once removes all the hesitation next time.
📹 When Something Goes Wrong
- Can’t hear them: Check the volume button on the side of your phone, and make sure it’s not on silent/mute.
- Video is frozen or choppy: This is almost always a WiFi issue — move closer to your router, or switch off WiFi and use cell data instead.
- The call won’t connect: Double check you’re using the right app — FaceTime only works between Apple devices, so if they have an Android phone, try Google Meet or WhatsApp instead.
📹 Try This First
Text one family member right now: “Can we try a video call this week?” That single message is usually the hardest part — everything after it is easy.
Until next time,
— Steve
